Israeli’s Military Intelligence Chief, Haliva Resigns Over Hamas Attack
The Israeli military has announced that Major General Aharon Haliva, the head of its intelligence directorate, has resigned.
Haliva reportedly resigned after taking responsibility for the failures that resulted in the October 7 attack by Hamas.
Nation Post understands that Major General Haliva is the first senior official to resign in the aftermath of the attack, which sent shockwaves through Israel and the global community.
The military said in a statement that “Major General Aharon Haliva, in coordination with the chief of the general staff, has requested to end his position, following his leadership responsibility as the head of the intelligence directorate for the events of October 7.”
“It was decided that MG Aharon Haliva will end his position and retire from the IDF (army), once his successor is appointed in an orderly and professional process.”
Haliva, who dedicated 38 years to the force, assumed accountability for not being able to stop the attack in his letter of resignation.
“On Saturday, October 7th 2023, Hamas carried out a deadly surprise attack against the state of Israel,” he wrote in the letter, a copy of which was given to journalists by the military.
“The intelligence division under my command did not live up to the task we were entrusted with.
“I carry that black day with me ever since. Day after day, night after night. I will forever carry with me the terrible pain of the war,” Haliva noted in his letter.
He called for a “thorough investigation into factors and circumstances” that led to the attack.
According to official Israeli figures, the Hamas attack led to the deaths of 1,170 individuals, with the majority being civilians, as reported by AFP.
Israel has since declared its commitment to eradicating Hamas and is currently carrying out a fierce offensive against the militant organization that governs the Gaza Strip.
The health ministry of the Palestinian territory has reported that 34,097 individuals, predominantly women and children, have lost their lives in Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
