June 12: Opposition Must Unite to Strengthen Democracy - Atiku

On June 12th, as Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a united opposition to fortify the nation’s democratic process.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey, he remarked, “Truth be told, there’s no substitute for democracy as a form of government.”

Atiku honored the sacrifices of key figures in Nigeria’s democratic history, including MKO Abiola and his wife Kudirat Abiola, Tafida Shehu Yar’Adua, and Alfred Rewane.

“The struggle that birthed this democracy is abundant with coalitions and alliances,” he noted.

Celebrating 25 years of electoral politics, he praised the resilience of the Nigerian people and the political class.

“It is an unprecedented epoch in our history,” he said, lauding their efforts in nurturing democracy.

However, Atiku criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for widespread poverty and insecurity.

He also blamed opposition parties for their failure to unite.

“The opposition parties are even more guilty than the ruling party for the seeming lack of capacity to come together,” he asserted.

Atiku emphasized, “The fortunes of Nigeria lie in forging a coalition.” As the nation celebrates Democracy Day, his words remind us of the need for unity and the ongoing challenges in upholding democratic ideals.
