House Of Reps Moves To Probe Sack Of 600 CBN Staff
The House of Representatives has instructed its committees on Banking Institutions and Federal Character to investigate the sudden dismissal of approximately 600 employees by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
This decision was made following the approval of a motion of urgent national importance put forward by Rep Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi (Nasarawa, SDP).
Gbefwi highlighted in his motion that the CBN has been reducing its workforce, including directors, as part of its restructuring efforts.
He expressed concerns over the arbitrary nature of these dismissals, which have sparked controversies due to the lack of fair hearings and adherence to established procedures.
Gbefwi emphasized that terminating employees’ contracts without due process will negatively impact their morale and productivity. He further emphasized that the country cannot afford to lose skilled employees through arbitrary retrenchment by the apex bank.
The motion was unanimously approved through a voice vote and has been referred to the committees on Banking Institutions and Federal Character for further investigation, with a report expected within four weeks.
In other news, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently made available a detailed compilation of licensed Deposit Money Banks that are currently approved for operation in the nation.
This compilation, published on the CBN’s official website on Tuesday, offers significant information about Nigeria’s ever-evolving banking sector.
