Hunger: FG Suspends Import Duties, Taxes On Food Commodities
The Federal government of Nigeria has on wednesday unveiled series of strategic measures to crash high food prices threatening livelihood.
This was confirmed in a statement by the Minister of Agriculture, Abubakar Kyari via a post on his verified X account.
He stated that the new measures will be implemented over the next 180 days both on land and sea borders.
According to kyari, the measures include, a 150day duty-free import window on food commodities, suspension of duties, tariffs and taxes on the importation of certain food commodities.
The food commodities include, maize, husked brown rice, wheat and cow peas.
He added that imported foods will be subjected to Recommended Retail Price(RRP).
In his post, he assured Nigerians that 250,000 metric tonnes of maize and 250,000 metric tonnes of wheat will be imported and supplied to small scale processors and millers.
This is happening at a time, when the Youths and concerned Nigerians are proposing a nationwide protest over the increasing hardship in the country.
Recall few days ago, when the Chief Whip of the Nigeria Senate said that the President is unaware of the food crisis and insecurity plaguing the nation.
AlI Ndume maintained that the President is been caged by forces in the presidency.
