LG Autonomy Gets Supreme Court Nod

As NULGE Says 50% of Nigeria Problem Solved

Finally the Federal Government through the apex court on thursday granted financial autonomy to Local Government.

This was followed by a statement released by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees(NULGE) affirming that 50% of Nigeria problem has been solved.

LG autonomy was confirmed in a judgment declared by the supreme Court describing the allocation of local government funds to state Governors as unconstitutional.

The seven man panel led by Justice Emmanuel Agim confirmed that funds belonging to the 774 LGAs in the country should be managed by the LGAs.

With this judgement, the state Governors now lacks the power to appoint a caretaker committee.

Also local government council is only recognisable with a democratically elected government and not by any form of appointment by state executives.
