Breaking: Buhari’s Minister Ogbonnaya Onu Dies

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who served as the Minister of Science and Technology in the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, has been confirmed dead.

A reliable source close to the former Minister disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday. Onu, a former governor of Abia State, reportedly died while receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Nigeria.

Another source confirmed that the burial arrangements for Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu will be officially announced by his family in the near future.

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, a distinguished engineer, previously lectured at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Nigeria, before entering politics.

A top-notch engineering graduate, he was elected governor of the former Abia State in 1992, but the military prematurely ended his term in 1994. He hails from the Uburu community in Ohaozara local government area, which is now part of Ebonyi State.

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu later rose to become the national chairman of the now-defunct All Nigerian People’s Party (ANPP), which eventually merged into the APC, a political party formed in 2013 through the amalgamation of major opposition parties.

He was appointed as the Minister of Science and Technology in 2015 by the former Nigerian president, Muhammad Buhari, a role he held for eight years.

In 2023, he vied for the APC presidential nomination but was defeated by President Bola Tinubu.

Dr. Onu passed away at the age of 71, leaving behind children and other relatives.
