Joe Igbokwe, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has criticized popular political activist, Aisha Yesufu, for boycotting the ‘old’ national anthem at a recent event.

Nation Post reports that a video clip surfaced on the internet earlier showing Aisha Yesufu using her phone during the recitation of the “Nigeria we hail thee,” national anthem.

Yesufu noticeably avoided the anthem, which was recently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

It is worth noting that this incident occurred during an event where everyone else stood up to honour and sing the national anthem.

In a clip shared on her X handle earlier, Yesufu captioned: “Not my national anthem.”

Her action has since generated mixed reactions on and off the media. Recall that Aisha Yesufu is a staunch supporter of the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.

Reacting, Igbokwe said Aisha Yesufu’s actions are disrespectful and detrimental to both herself and her family.

“Aisha Yesufu cannot respect the National Anthem. Let us see where all the nonsensical behaviour will take her to. She may not understand the damage she is doing to herself and her family. Continue,” Igbokwe posted on Facebook.

As mentioned earlier, President Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law during the week. The old national anthem, “Nigeria, we hail thee,” was reintroduced with the president’s assent.

Mixed reactions trailed the decision to assent to the bill at a time when Nigerians are experiencing hardship.

Amid the reactions, Tinubu said the reintroduction of new national anthem was a priority to him.
