We Are Investigating Many Nigerian Celebrities Involved In Naira Abuse – EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced that it is investigating several Nigerian celebrities who are allegedly involved in the abuse of the country’s currency, the Naira.
According to the anti-corruption agency, many of these celebrities have already provided valuable information to the Commission, while others have been summoned by investigators to provide their statements.
The EFCC has emphasized that no one will be exempt from scrutiny.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming public awareness, support, and participation in the Commission’s efforts to combat Naira abuse, the dollarization of the economy, and the enforcement of all relevant laws pertaining to these issues.
The statement added: “Increasingly, members of the public are drawing the Commission’s attention to video recordings of Nigerians from all walks of life abusing the naira. These gestures amply demonstrate the public’s rising consciousness of the sanctity of our national currency and the need for collaborative engagement to sustain the tempo.
“To this end, the Commission will always investigate and prosecute anyone involved in the abuse of the Naira. Old videos being exhumed and flying around for the Commission’s attention are noted as the Commission is sensitive to the fact that its Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and Dollarization of the Economy commenced operations on February 7, 2024. However, going forward, new videos of such infractions will be investigated and prosecuted.
“At the moment, the Commission is investigating several celebrities involved in Naira abuse. Many of them have made useful statements to the Commission, and investigators working on the matter have invited many more. The EFCC will not relent in its no-sacred-cow mode of operations, and the public should be wary of running afoul of laws against the crime.”
