Third Mainland Bridge Reopened, Upgraded With Speed Cameras

The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos has recently been equipped with speed limit cameras by the Federal Government.

This initiative aims to promote responsible driving, protect the bridge, and enhance overall safety.

Mrs Olukorede Keisha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, officially announced the bridge’s reopening on Thursday, Nation Post reports.

She emphasized that this speed limit implementation is a collaborative effort with the Federal Road Safety Corps. The decision to install these cameras was made after the bridge underwent extensive rehabilitation starting from January 9th, due to numerous areas that required repair.

Mrs Keisha further revealed that the speed cameras would be prominently displayed in the median, ensuring that they capture any motorists who exceed the designated speed limit. It is important to note that immediate penalties will not be imposed on those caught exceeding the speed limit.

Keisha said, “Today, we are fixing the speed limits. It is in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Corps and they are on the bridge now doing that.

“The speed limit has been designed to be 80km/per hour. So, if you speed past 80km in the next few weeks, your honourable Commissioner will have you to contend with.

“And at the renewal of your vehicle license, you will be surcharged. So it’s no longer going to be business as usual.’’

Keisha, representing the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, highlighted that despite the bridge being completely accessible to the public, there are still ongoing supplementary tasks being carried out on it.
