There was commotion in Kano on Wednesday morning after an arsonist, Shafiu Aminu, reportedly set a mosque ablaze in Laraba Abasawa, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Reports according to Daily Trust revealed that the incident, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday, resulted in injuries to worshippers.

The community members were in the midst of the ‘Subh’ prayer when the arsonist carried out the attack.

An anonymous community member revealed that the perpetrator used petrol to ignite the fire while approximately 40 individuals were praying. He then locked the mosque after starting the fire.

It took some time for people outside to become aware of the situation and rescue the victims who were struggling to escape. Around 28 worshippers who suffered severe injuries were promptly taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for treatment.

When journalists visited the scene of the incident on Wednesday morning, a resident, Ibrahim Jibrin, said: “I was about going to the mosque when I saw a boy running engulfed by fire shouting for help.

“We didn’t know what was happening before then. This is the third time he (Aminu) has attacked people here. He had once hit two of his elder brothers and took himself to the police station, claiming that he had killed them.”

According to residents, Aminu voluntarily surrendered to the police following the incident.

Despite numerous attempts to reach Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the spokesperson for the Kano Police Command, he consistently declined incoming calls.
