The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested no fewer than three hundred and nineteen suspected drug peddlers in Kano State in recent raids.

The Commander of the NDLEA in Kano State, Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, revealed this in a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to him, a total of 319 suspects were arrested and 4.7 tonnes of illicit drugs were confiscated during the operations that occurred between January and March 2024 in the state.

Out of the arrested suspects, there were 14 females and 305 males. During the mentioned period, the seized drugs amounted to over four tonnes, consisting of 2.3kg of marijuana and 2.4kg of psychotropic substances.

Additionally, the law enforcement operatives also seized over five million pills of tramadol and 1.9kg of other dangerous substances.

Furthermore, the command has successfully obtained 33 convictions of individuals involved in drug trafficking and other drug-related offences within the three-month timeframe.

“We rehabilitated 26 drug addicts, processed 38 visa clearances, and conducted 30 drug integrity tests for individuals and members of the state Emirate Council,” Idris-Ahmad revealed, adding that during the period under review, the command dislodged 39 illicit drug joints that were serving as hubs for drug activities in the state.

Idris-Ahmad assured residents of Kano of adequate measures to ensure a peaceful and drug-free holiday during the forthcoming Eid-El-Fitr celebration.

“The command is committed to maintaining law and order during this festive period and to prevent the spread of illicit drugs in the community,” Idris-Ahmad said.

The NDLEA boss restated the commitment of the command to establish a society free from drugs and to guarantee the safety and welfare of the residents of Kano.

“We will continue to work to dismantle drug trafficking networks, arrest perpetrators, and prevent the spread of drug abuse in the state,” Idris-Ahmad said.
