LAWMA To Begin Distribution Of Waste Bags, Bins To Lagos Tenants

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is set to begin distributing waste bags and bins to residents across the state.

This announcement was made by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in a press release on Sunday.

The press release, which Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu quoted during the program’s unveiling, highlighted the initiative as a step towards promoting proper waste disposal across the state.

On Sunday, Governor Sanwo-Olu addressed the issue of improper waste disposal in drains and the removal of maintenance holes at the Campos playground, Odunlami Street, issuing a warning to the community about the consequences of such actions.

He encouraged the community to adopt environmentally friendly practices in their daily routines.

Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his concern over the increasing pollution of drains and the need for all residents to adopt eco-friendly habits to prevent disease outbreaks.

He also noted the removal of maintenance holes and their subsequent littering during his visits to various streets.

The governor emphasized that the awareness campaign would be expanded to all 57 local government areas and LCDA to ensure community participation and access to a clean, safe, flood-free, and sustainable environment.

He assured that a task force, comprising officials from the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the Environment, would be established to address the issue of maintenance hole removal.

Sanwo Olu suggested that he would guide the executive council members every weekend in cleaning the streets and neighbourhoods, clearing out drains, and ensuring garbage removal as part of a regular practice before deciding whether to continue the Monthly Sanitation Exercise.

The Lagos State Governor mentioned that the day, which falls on the same date as the global Tree Planting Day celebrated on July 14, would motivate the community to adopt a culture of planting trees, highlighting that trees serve not only for making the area more beautiful but also for controlling temperatures and helping to lessen the impact of climate change.

Wahab Speaks On Importance Of Awareness

In his opening remarks, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the return of the sanitation exercise to foster a clean and healthy environment, as well as to boost community involvement in managing waste, thereby reducing the chances of disease spread.

“As we all know, Monthly Environmental Sanitation was a culture in Lagos State some years back; as such, the awareness of the re-introduction of exercise in the State is going to be another bold step of the present administration,” Wahab said.

Wahab mentioned that cleaning up the environment sets the stage for individuals to adopt cleanliness habits that protect their health and extend their lives by encouraging a clean environment.

He stated that the government’s initiative to raise awareness and educate the public about the revival of this practice motivates everyone to adopt the habit of keeping their homes, neighbourhoods, and drainage areas clean.

He further noted that officials from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) are consistently present to pick up and properly manage waste collected in bags.
