A review of budget performance documents reveals that the Kano State government, under Governor Abba Yusuf, spent N10 billion on office furniture and fittings in the first six months of 2024.

According to Sahara Reporters, Kano State had initially budgeted N3.9 billion for office furniture and fittings for the entire 2024 fiscal year. However, by the end of the second quarter, N10.4 billion had already been spent.

In comparison, capital expenditure on water resources amounted to only N4.2 billion in the same period. Other sectors received significantly less funding: rural and community development capital expenditure stood at N179 million, the education sector received N2.5 billion, higher education got N323.6 million, health capital expenditure was N959 million, and rehabilitation of hospitals and health centres was allocated N1.3 billion.

In total, these ministries’ capital expenditures amounted to N9.4 billion in six months, less than the N10.4 billion spent on office furniture and fittings.

This prioritization of office furniture and fittings by the Kano State government comes at a time when the state faces significant developmental challenges, including inadequate healthcare and chronic water scarcity. It also coincides with calls for reduced governance costs.

Weeks ago, the Northern Patriotic Agenda (NPA), a Northern group, advised Governor Abba Yusuf to focus on his administration and deliver democratic dividends to the residents of the state.

The group criticized Governor Yusuf for neglecting his gubernatorial duties and engaging in political grandstanding, thereby perpetuating the suffering of the people of Kano.
