The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has given his approval for a new minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants in the state.

This announcement was made during the inauguration of the new Labour House in Edo state on Monday.

The new wage will be implemented starting from May 1st, 2024.

Nation Post reports that this decision comes amidst the ongoing dispute between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Federal Government regarding the need to raise the minimum wage in response to the rising national inflation and food inflation rates.

In March 2024, the inflation rate surged to 33.2 per cent from 31.70 per cent in February, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Additionally, food inflation increased to 31.7 per cent in March from 30 per cent in February.

The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had proposed N615,000 as the new minimum wage for all workers in the country.

Following the establishment of a 37-member panel by President Bola Tinubu, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima on January 30, the panel was tasked with recommending a new national minimum wage. The panel includes representatives from federal and state governments, the private sector, and organized labor.

During the panel’s inaugural meeting, Shettima emphasized the need for a prompt resolution and early submission of reports, as the current N30,000 minimum wage was set to expire at the end of March 2024.
