FG To Sanction Discos If Band A Customers Do Not Enjoy 20 Hours Electricity Supply

The Nigerian government will take action against electricity distribution companies, DisCos, that do not provide 20 hours of electricity to customers in the Band A category, according to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Nation Post reports that Adelabu made this statement during a recent announcement via X (formerly known as Twitter).

He emphasized that the recent tariff increase specifically affects electricity consumers in the Band A category who receive a minimum of 20 hours of power supply.

Following the decision by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, to raise electricity tariffs for Band A customers to N225 per kilowatt-hour from N66/kWh, there has been widespread discontent among Nigerians.

Identifying some of the provisions under the tariff adjustment reform, Adelabu noted: “Federal Government to save N1.5 trillion with tariff adjustment. Federal Government still subsidizing Bands below A.

“Pricing changes will help increase liquidity to the NESI. DisCos will be sanctioned for supplying less than 20 hours of electricity to Band A customers”.

He, nevertheless, refrained from specifying the type of penalty.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Society of Engineers urged NERC to enforce stringent penalties on Discos that do not provide Band A customers with 20 hours of power.
