Empowering Nigeria’s Democratic Future: Restoring Power to the People.
Hon. Blessing Oyefeso, President, Nigeria Youths in Politics, congratulates Nigeria on the 26th commemoration of its Democracy, urged the youth to reflect on our journey as a nation and to be resilient in holding government accountable to the people, this is the hallmark of democracy .
“As we commemorate this significant day, we honor the sacrifices of our forebears who fought for our democracy, the labour of those who lay their lives for our freedom will go in vein, if the Nigerian youth fail to rekindle the touch of freedom by holding the government accountable for their deeds, actions and inactions ”.
The State of the Nation:
Nigeria’s democracy has come a long way, yet we still face significant challenges that impedes our progress as a nation. Electoral malpractices, corruption, and unequal distribution of wealth undermine our progress. The Youthful population, are eager to contribute to our nation’s development, but the enabling environment needed isn’t available despite all efforts of past and present governments.
While we must commend the efforts of the current administration under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in delivering its renewed hope agenda for a prosperous future; we must also demand and remind of them that “the primary responsibility of government (constitutionally) is to provide for the welfare and security of ordinary Nigerians” and as such, the government must revisit its policies that contravene the Constitutional duties to its citizens, policy framework that has continued to widen the gap between the rich and the poor, reducing the purchasing power of the citizens and eroded the living standards of the masses.
Insecurity persists as a result of the zero value placed on human lives, unequivocally, the Nigerian state has little or no value for the lives of ordinary and vulnerable citizens. As clearly seen in the recent and frequent attacks on harmless civilians in Benue and Plateau state.
The Role of Youth in Democracy:
Youths have a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s future. Our voices matter, and our collective action can bring about meaningful reforms, if we unite in solidarity and fight for a meaningful change.
A Call to Action:
While reflecting on our journey to where we are today, it’s important for us to form an alliance, a formidable front to fight against the enemies of our country democracy. We must unite together;
– Strengthen Our Electoral Institutions: By mounting pressure on the current political leaders and the government of the day on #ElectoralReform which is the only guarantee for a free, fair, and transparent elections; it will never come free of charge, it’ll come with a cost of togetherness, strategic fight and solidarity for a better nation.
– Promote Youth Inclusion in Leadership : We must intensify our commitment to empower the youth with knowledge and increase awareness on youth participation in politics and decision-making; it only takes an informed mass of youth to stand up and fight for the future we desire.
– Accountability in Governance : We must Demand transparency, accountability and good governance, this is the hallmark of democracy.
Our Collective Responsibility:
We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to build a better Nigeria. Let us come together to promote democracy, fight corruption, and drive inclusive development.
In conclusion, let us remember that Our Democracy is only as strong as our commitment to its values. Nigerian Youth!, we have the Power to shape our nation’s future.
Let us rise to this challenge and build a brighter future for Nigeria.
