Defence Minister Bello Matawalle Blasts Northern Elders Forum, Says NEF Speaks For Themselves, Not For The Region
The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has condemned the Northern Elders Forum’s utterances. He noted that they are only seeking political relevance, which is a burden on governance and the nation’s political system.
According to a report by Nation Post, the Minister, in a statement, described the Northern Elders Forum as a political paperweight that has embarked on a destructive path to bring disgrace to the north and thereby create political disunity among Nigerians.
Bello Matawalle further explained that the position of the so-called group was geared toward selfish gains and speaks for themselves instead of the people.
Bello established that the forum is seeking unnecessary relevance despite the eventual failure of the candidate they sponsored in the recent 2023 general elections.
He, therefore, advised the Northern Elders Forum to seek accommodation in the present government by joining hands with President Tinubu-led administration, thereby creating a productive synergy that will further help the nation in moving forward.
He described the threat by NEF to unseat President Tinubu as baseless and lacking any form of political weight. He blamed them for shielding them from their responsibilities to unite the north but instead created disunity.
He says, “Our region, the North, is united, disciplined and politically driven enough not to listen and accept being teleguided by any group of elites who had fed fat in the past on the North’s resources and opportunities and destroyed the region and nation due to their selfishness.”
