Court Orders Detention Of Suspected Nigerian ISIS Member For Two Months
Justice Inyang Ekwo from the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a ruling for the detention of a Nigerian individual, Emmanuel Osase, who is accused of being associated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, for a period of 60 days.
The decision was made in response to a motion ex-parte presented by the Department of State Services (DSS).
During the court session on Wednesday, the DSS representative informed the court that the case was brought forward in accordance with section 66(1) of the terrorism (prevention and prohibition) Act 2022.
The counsel requested the court to grant permission for the service to hold the accused for 60 days until the investigation is completed.
In his verdict, Justice Ekwo, acting as a vacation judge, approved the request made by the service.
Subsequently, he scheduled the next hearing for June 3, 2024.
Osase, who was apprehended on March 11th, faced allegations of disseminating the ideologies of the terrorist organization, challenging Nigeria’s democratic governance, and inciting acts of terrorism against Nigeria and its symbols of authority.
According to the DSS, Osase had previously served a five-year prison sentence in France for offences related to terrorism and was subsequently expelled upon the fulfilment of his punishment.
The agency emphasized that, based on their initial inquiry, Osase remained engaged in terrorist activities.
