Cheers As Govt Increases Workers’ Salary By N10,000

The government of Ebonyi State led by Governor Francis Nwifuru has approved the increase of the salaries of civil servants by N10,000.

The governor has also given the green light for the hiring of 1,700 teachers to address the staffing shortage in public primary and secondary schools.

Nation Post reports that this announcement was made by the governor on May 1, 2024, during the Workers’ Day festivities at Pa Ngele Oruta township Stadium in Abakaliki.

According to him, “Your commitment and sacrifices are unmatched anywhere in the world.

“We are celebrating today because it is important to reciprocate the gesture, and this administration has something in store for you as contained in the People’s Charter of Needs.”

He emphasized that his administration would build upon the accomplishments of the previous administration by enhancing the state’s economy.

Nwifuru acknowledged the workers as valuable contributors who should be recognized for their dedication. He guaranteed the people that promotions would be given regularly and salaries, pensions, and gratuities would be promptly paid.

He revealed that the gratuities of individuals who retired from January 2024 until the present had been fully disbursed.

“Presently, we are paying salaries, pensions, and gratuities as they are due, and we do not owe anyone while we wait for the outcome of the negotiation on minimum wage,” he said.

The governor further promised to look into all the requests made by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ebonyi State chapter and approve an N10,000 increment in their individual salary.

Meanwhile, in a joint speech by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Ebonyi State chapters, read by the NLC chairman, Professor Ogugua Egwu, he stated that the theme of the event “People First” is an expression of the absolute need to prioritize the people in all spheres of life.

He made an appeal to the state governor to increase the number of teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the state and improve the benefits provided to the workers.

Additionally, he requested the governor to enforce the independence of the judiciary, approve better welfare packages for judiciary workers, and reinstate certain staff members of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) who were suspended due to their involvement in union activities.

Furthermore, he urged the governor to reintegrate the staff of the former Ebonyi State Teaching Hospital (EBSUTH) into the new teaching hospital, revitalize Ebonyi State College of Education to provide training for middle-class professionals, and streamline the management of gratuity schemes in the state and council areas, among other matters.
