Chad Interim Junta Leader, Deby Itno Beat Prime Minister In Presidential Election
Chad’s military leader, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, has been declared the winner in the recent presidential election.
According to the Chadian National Election Management Agency, Deby Itno won the presidential election with over 61 per cent of the votes cast.
Deby defeated Succès Masra, the incumbent prime minister and main opponent, who received 18.5 per cent.
Deby’s victory secures his position as the incumbent president and eliminates the need for a runoff election. Furthermore, this victory ensures the continuation of his family’s 34-year dynasty.
Prior to the announcement of the election results, Masra declared himself the winner through a Facebook broadcast. He urged his supporters and security forces to resist what he claimed was an attempt by Deby to “steal the victory from the people.”
“A small number of individuals believe they can make people believe that the election was won by the same system that has been ruling Chad for decades,” he said.
“To all Chadians who voted for change, who voted for me, I say: mobilise. Do it calmly, with a spirit of peace.”
In the president’s triumphant address, he pledged to represent the interests of all Chadians, regardless of their voting preferences or alternative decisions.
The anticipated provisional results are scheduled to be announced on May 21, with the final outcome expected by June 5.
The confirmation of Monday’s election results is pending the validation of the country’s Constitutional Council.
This election signifies the conclusion of the political transition in the nation, which has been from military governance to a democratic system.
