Democracy Day: Group Reflects On Nigeria’s Progress
A civil society organization known as The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has marked the June 12th democracy day with honest reflection on the state of the nation.
The statement was made by the national Coordinator of the group, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi on Friday.
He says, “Democracy as practiced in Nigeria has failed to deliver its promised benefits to the people.”
“Despite 25 years of democratic governance, key indicators show worsening economic conditions”, he added.
According to an NBS report, the country has a poverty rate of 63%, with over 133 million Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty.
He further spoke on how Unemployment has soared to 33.3%, with youth unemployment surpassing 50%.
He explained that Inflation has skyrocketed from 10% pre-democracy to 33.69%, eroding purchasing power and living standards.
He says “As Nigeria marks 25 years of democracy, the CNG calls on all Nigerians to reflect on the system’s effectiveness.
“It is clear that democracy in its current form has failed to deliver development, security, and prosperity for all.
“We must either domesticate democracy or design a system that aligns with our traditions, culture, and history to ensure genuine progress.”
